Liljevalchs‘ Exhibition Programme 2012
The 2012 Spring Salon
27 January - 25 March
As always, the Spring Salon is Liljevalchs' proud kick-off to the new art year! To be selected or not to be selected to the exhibition, where all contributions are evaluated by a jury, that is the question for both well-established and non-established artistic practitioners. For the audience, the Spring Salon offers a unique opportunity to see a wealth of diverse and unexpected, and perhaps expected, artistic expressions and techniques. All the works exhibited at the Spring Salon are for sale.
This year's jury comprises some of Sweden's most prominent artists: Annika von Hausswolff, Ernst Billgren and Peter Johansson. Liljevalchs is represented by its director Mårten Castenfors who chairs the jury.
The Young Spring Salon
14 February - 25 March
For the fifth year running, Liljevalchs presents the Young Spring Salon. It is a younger and smaller edition of the major Spring Salon and is located one floor down in the gallery. Young people from Stockholm County can apply for the exhibition and their works are evaluated and selected by a jury. Take the opportunity to see the artists, filmmakers, craftspeople and designers of the future. Remember where you saw them first!
PS. The difference between the Young Spring Salon and the major Spring Salon is that none of the works shown in the exhibition are for sale. We believe that it is the young participants themselves that are best suited to decide what to do with their works after the exhibition.
Jarl Ingvarsson
14 April - 13 May
Born in 1955, Jarl Ingvarsson is, since the 1980s, one of Sweden's most prominent expressive painters, a visual poet with absolute colour pitch, who attacks the canvas with irresistible wittiness. Continuously renewing his art, he surprises us with both tenderness and brutality in colours and lines. Jarl has, in many ways, become a "painter's painter" and is constantly rediscovered by new generations of artists.
The exhibition at Liljevalchs is absolutely unique, since Jarl, in the exposition of his earlier works, has also created some twenty new paintings especially for the presentation. Welcome to an encounter with a expansive, colourful and fetchingly subjective painting!
Swedish Handicraft 100 Years
6 June - 2 September
The National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies [Svenska Hemslöjds-föreningarnas Riksförbund (SHR)] celebrates its 100th anniversary and its fantastic jubilee exhibition will, of course, be presented at Liljevalchs. The Association, in collaboration with exhibition architect Martin Jämtlid, will transform Liljevalchs' galleries into an extravagant and proud Arts and Crafts fest with inspiring and interest-provoking themes. On display will be the collective work, "Can you see the leaves on the trees", which will consist of 2,000 leaves created by people around the country.
Welcome to an exhibition for everyone who is interested in seeing, learning and doing!
August
5 Oktober 2012 - 8 January 2013
August Strindberg with a difference! Liljevalchs' major exhibition focuses on August the human being, the artist, the playwright, the debater and the alchemist. Visitors will enter thematically dramatised galleries and ambiences grounded in Strindberg's life and work. The galleries will be designed by stage designer Ulla Kassius and present a mix of painting, photographs and installations - sound and light.
In addition, August's plays will be performed in the exhibition twice a week. Twenty-two actors and directors from Stockholm City Theatre will guide the audience on a journey through Strindberg's texts. Poet Eva Runefelt has written a new monologue especially for Liljevalchs which will be performed in the exhibition August. (Performance dates to be announced. Tickets available from Stockholms stadsteater.)
Follow August!
Strindberg blogs, twitters and facebooks from his Occult Diary. (From December 2011 in Swedish but soon in English.)
Liljevalchs lets August himself do the talking in preparation of (and during) our major Strindberg exhibition in the autumn of 2012. The entries are from the Occult Diary - August's legendary diary in which he chronicles events, thoughts and observations from 1896 to 1908. Every entry will be published on the correct date, with a delay of some hundred years.
The entries have been selected and transcribed from a facsimile, an exact photographic copy of the original manuscript.
They are published on www.august2012.se and may be followed on twitter.com/AugStrindberg and www.facebook.com/august2012.
